    Margaret Alva Bio

    Margaret Alva is an Indian politician who has served as the Governor of Rajasthan until her tenure in August 2014. Previously, she had been the Governor of Uttarakhand. She took the position in Rajasthan from the Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil who had been holding that additional charge of the state. Before being the governor, she was a senior figure in Indian National Congress and was also the joint secretary of the All India Congress Committee.

    Early life and Education

    Margaret Alva was born Margaret Nazareth on 14 April 1942 in Mangalore, Madras Presidency, British India. She belongs to a Christian family. She has earned a BA degree from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. After that, she obtained a law degree from Government Law College of the same city. During her college times, she was a keen and appreciated debater and had also some involvement in student movements.

    She combined her work as an advocate with involvement in welfare organizations. Subsequently, she became president of The Young Women’s Christian Association. Earlier,  she was involved with the Karuna non-governmental organization which she founded, and that organization focused on issues relating to women and children.

    Political career

    In 1969, she decided to enter politics as she was strongly influenced by her husband and father-in-law. Her mother-in-law, Violet Alva, was also a member of the Rajya Sabha in the 1960s. From 1975 to 1977, she served as joint secretary of the All India Congress Committee. Then from 1970 to 1980, she served as General Secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

    In April 1974, she was elected to Rajya Sabha as a representative of Congress and served there for six-year terms. Then she was re-elected for further three six-year terms in 1980, 1986, and 1992. From 1983 to 1985 during her time in Rajya Sabha, she served as its Vice Chairman and also served as Union Minister of State in the ministry of parliamentary affairs from 1984 to 1985 and then from 1993 to 1996. She has also served for Youth and Sports and Women and Children Development as an arm of the Ministry of Human Resource Development from 1985 to 1989.

    From 1991 to 1996, she served as a Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions. Then from 1999 to 2004, she served as Member of Parliament for Kanara constituency. On 6th August 2009, she became 4th Governor of Uttarakhand and served that position till 14 May 2012.

    Then from 12 May 2012, she became 20th Governor of Rajasthan and served that position till 5 August 2014. From 7 July 2014 to 15 July 2014, she has also served as 23rd Governor of Gujarat.

    Then on 12 July 2014, she became 17th Governor of Goa and served that position till 7th August 2014.

    Personal life

    On 24 May 1964, she married Niranjan Thomas Alva and they have one daughter and three sons. She met her husband at the Government Law College. Her husband now operates a successful export business which has given her financial security and was also beneficial for her later career.
