    Subhashini Ali Bio

    Subhashini Ali is an Indian politician who served as a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). She has also served as the President of the All India Democratic Women’s Association. She is a former Member of Parliament from Kanpur.

    Early life and Education

    Subhashini Ali was born on 29 December 1947 in Kanpur, United Provinces, India. Currently, she is 74 years old as of 2021. She is the daughter of Colonel Prem Sehgal and captain Lakshmi Sehgal. Both of her parents were part of the Indian National Army.

    She completed her early education at Welham Girls School in Dehradun. After that, she went to Women’s Christian College to complete her bachelor’s degree. Later she did her master’s from Kanpur University.

    Political career

    As a trade unionist and leader of the All India Democratic Women’s Association, she was once very inspired and influenced in the politics of Kanpur where the Communist Party of India held sway over trade unions. This influence of CPI helped her in winning the general elections of 1989 to the Parliament and she defeated the BJP candidate. After that in 1996, she lost the general elections. Later in the 2004 general election, she finished in fifth place. Again she contested in the general elections of 2014 from Barrackpore as a CPI candidate but she lost that too.

    Presently, she is a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). She was inducted to the polit bureau of the Communist Party of India in 2015 and thus she became the second woman member in the polit bureau after Brinda Karat.

    Films

    She has designed period costumes for a 1981 classic named Umrao Jaan which was directed by her husband Muzaffar Ali. In 2001, she also dabbled in amateur acting and her first role was in Asoka. After that in 2002, she acted in an English feature named The Guru. Then again in 2005, she acted with her fellow Party member, Brinda Karat, in the film Amu. The film Anjuman is inspired by her life and directed by her husband which shows her struggles in Kanpur with the AIDWA.

    Personal life

    She was formerly married to Muzaffar Ali who is a filmmaker. But now she is divorced. They have a son named Shaad Ali who is a filmmaker and has directed films like Saathiya, Bunty Aur Babli, and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

    She is a communist and an atheist. She resides on VIP road, Civil Lines, Kanpur.
