    In the year 1989, she performed her duties as the general secretary of the AIADMK. It is a Dravidian party and its members used to call her “Amma”, the Mother, and “Puratchi Thalaivi”, the Revolutionary leader.

    She has been criticized in the media by the opposition for fostering an identity cult and asking for absolute loyalty from AIADMK parliamentarians and ministers, who usually openly knelt before her.

    Jayaram Jayalalithaa first got into fame as a leading film actress in the 1960s.

    She had gotten into the occupation unwillingly, at the prompting of her mother to reinforce the family.

    Therefore, she worked prolifically. Jayalalithaa acted in 140 films from 1961 to 1980, primarily in the Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada dialects. Jayalalithaa got praise for her adaptability and versatility as an actress.

    Political Career

    In 1982, Jayalalithaa entered the AIADMK when M.G.R. was CM. She rose in popularity in politics within a few years. Thereafter, she turned into the AIADMK propaganda secretary after getting elected to the Rajya Sabha.

    After MGR’s death in 1987, she announced herself as the political heir. The party was headed by MGR’s widow, V.N. Janaki Ramachandran, who became the leader of the AIADMK.

    In the 1989 poll, she grew into the Leader of the Opposition to the DMK-led government, which was headed by M. Karunanidhi, her bête noire.

    In 1991, Jayalalithaa became CM for the first time in Tamil Nadu. She is the youngest CM to date.

    Political Timeline

    She gained a reputation for rationalizing state power among a coterie of bureaucrats in her council of ministers. She celebrated nature.

    She successfully started a scheme called “cradle-baby,” which enabled mothers to offer their newborns for adoption.

    Despite her official salary of only a rupee a month, Jayalalithaa nourished her in public displays of wealth by arranging a lavish marriage for her foster son V. N. Sudhakaran, who was Sasikala’s elder sister in 1995.

    • In the six months after completing her six months as CM, she was named in some controversy and was arrested in midnight raids. Thereafter, her government became unpopular.

    In her second term from 2006 to 2011, she won the election and was sworn in as CM for the fourth time.

    Thereafter, her government received popularity for her social-welfare agenda and she gained popularity as “Amma.” After that, with her name, there were branded canteens, bottled water, cement, and salt.

    In her three-year tenure, she was named in a disproportionate-assets case, calling her disqualified in order to hold the office.

    She returned as CM in 2015.Thereafter, she participated in the 2016 election and became the first CM since MGR in 1984 to be polled back into office.

    Jayalalithaa’s Demise

    In 2016, she fell ill and was hospitalized for 75 days, and then died in December 2016 because of cardiac arrest. She became the first CM to die in the office.

    However, Jayalalithaa was never married and had no children. In 2020, Deepak and Deepa Jayakumar, her nephew and niece, were declared as her legal heirs by the Madras High Court.
