Personal Life and Family
Roopa was born in 1963 to Samarendra Lal Ganguly and Juthika Ganguly.
She grew up in a joint family. Ganguli did her schooling at Beltala Girls’ High School and Jodhpur Park Girls’ High School. Thereafter, she gained a bachelor’s degree from the Jogamaya Devi College in Kolkata.
Political Career
In 2015, Ganguly entered the BJP before the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election and withdrew from the Artiste Forum because she believed that a political personality should not remain a powerful appointment in the Artiste Forum.
However, she lost the election to Trinamool Congress candidate and cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla.
Thereafter, she was then chosen as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, by the President of India. She even served her duty as the President of BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal.
Acting Career in Bengali Movie Industry
Roopa did her first acting job with Bijoy Chatterjee’s Hindi short film Nirupama in 1986 based on Rabindranath Tagore’s Bengali brief story Dena Paona and broadcasted on DD National.
In 1988, she debuted on the big screen opposite Chiranjeet in Prabhat Roy’s Bengali film Prateek.
In 1988, she did her role in the Hindi TV series Ganadevta and chased to wider glory and fame after she played as a Draupadi in B. R. Chopra’s Mahabharat in 1988–90.
Her work in this TV series got her several awards consisting of the Smita Patil Memorial Award.
