Poongothai Aladi Aruna Bio
Poongothai Aladi Aruna is an Indian Politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. Earlier from 2006 to 2011, she had served as Information and Technology Minister of Tamil Nadu. Later, In 2016, she took part in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election. She contested from Alangulam( State Assembly Constituency) and with 88891 votes she won the election.
Early life and Education
Aruna was born on 28 October 1964 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She is the daughter of Aladi Aruna who was a former DMK minister. She completed a part of her education in London. She is a Gynecologist by profession.
Political career
After her father’s death, she was given a ticket to contest the election. In the 2006 elections, she was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as a Dravida MunnetraKazhagam candidate from the Alangulam constituency. Later, she became Social Welfare Minister in the Tamilnadu Government at that time.
During her time as a Social Welfare Minister, Chief Minister Kalaignar M Karunanidhi announced the Two Egg scheme in the mid-day meals of school and now it is three times a day. During her period, the physically challenged people were given higher priority and given the extent of a complete survey, National ID card, government benefits, and motorized vehicles. On 14 May 2008, she submitted her resignation because of a controversy over the telephone conversation with S.K. Upadhyay was the Director of Vigilance and Anti-corruption about a corruption case involving her relative.
On 28 February 2009, she became the Minister for Information Technology to the Government of Tamilnadu and this was the first time that the Tamil Nadu government had a separate Minister for Information Technology.
Scandal
On 13 May 2008, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy released an audio CD in which Poongothai was requesting the Director of Vigilance and Anti-corruption, SK Upadhyay, to be soft on her relative named Jawahar. Jawahar is an electrical engineer in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. He was caught accepting bribes and so she was defending her relative. Later it was confirmed that the voice in the tape was really hers and this is why she resigned from the office accepting the responsibility.
Personal life
In 1980, she got married to Balaji Venugopal (V. Balaji). The couple has two daughters Samantha and Kavya.
