    Anandiben Patel – A Famous Indian Politician

    Anandiben Patel is an Indian politician and former teacher who is the current Governor of Uttar Pradesh, as well as the previous Governor of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat’s first female Chief Minister. Anandiben, a laureate of the President’s gallantry medal, wears the hats of an educationalist, social worker, and Gujarat cabinet minister, with up to five ministries. In 2018, she was appointed Governor of Madhya Pradesh, succeeding Om Prakash Kohli, who had been acting governor since September 2016. She is also Gujarat’s longest-serving female politician, having joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1987.  From 2007 until 2014, she served as Gujarat’s cabinet minister for road and building, revenue, urban development and urban housing, disaster management, and capital projects.     Early Life

    Anandiben Patel was born in Kharod village, Vijapur taluka, Mehsana district, Gujarat, in 1941, to Jethabhai Patel, a teacher. She was born into a household that valued ‘Saraswati’ (Goddess of Wisdom) over ‘Lakshmi’ (Goddess of Wealth) (Goddess of Wealth). For her high school studies, she transferred to N.M. High School, which had only three female students. She was an athlete as a kid and won the district championship for three years in a row. In 1960, she enrolled in college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in science. She has done exceptionally well in her academics throughout her academic career. In Mehsana, she received the “Veer Bala” award for her excellent athletic success. In 1960, Patel enrolled in Pilvai’s M. G. Panchal Science College. In Visnagar, she earned a bachelor’s degree in science. In 1962, she married Mafatlal.

    She responded to a newspaper ad for a teaching job in order to help maintain the family financially. She opted to teach the most challenging mathematics problem in her teacher interview. In 1967 or 1970, Patel worked as a teacher at Ahmedabad’s Mohiniba Kanya Vidyalaya, where she taught science and mathematics to higher secondary students. She then became the principal of the institution.

    Political Career

    Patel’s political career began in 1987, when she plunged into the Sardar Sarovar reservoir to save two girls who were drowning at a school picnic, for which she was awarded the president’s gallantry medal. The BJP’s senior cadre were impressed by Patel’s valour and encouraged him to join the party. She was initially hesitant to join the party, but when Keshubhai Patel and Narendra Modi persuaded her to do so, she became the Gujarat Pradesh Mahila Morcha President in 1987. 

    Anandiben spent weeks assisting locals in the bird-flu-stricken Viramgam area and pressuring government authorities to take aggressive measures to combat the epidemic. This was her first noteworthy political work. In 1992, she was the sole woman from Gujarat to participate in senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi’s Ekta Yatra. Anandiben Patel was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat in 1994, and as a member of Parliament, she represented India in the Fourth World Women’s Conference in Beijing, China the following year. After resigning from the Rajya Sabha, Patel ran for her maiden assembly election in 1998, representing Mandal seat. In the Keshubhai Patel government, she was appointed as a Minister of State.

    After that, she was appointed as a cabinet minister of Gujarat, with the charge of Education. During her first term as Education Minister, Anandi ben Patel established ‘Lok Dar bar’ to address educational problems. She is the minister in charge of the education department’s main initiative, “Shala Praveshosav,” which aims to boost school enrollment. Enrollment in schools increased as a result of this scheme. After incumbent Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was elected Prime Minister of India, Anandiben Patel was sworn in as the 15th Chief Minister of Gujarat on May 24, 2014. Following claims of mishandling the state’s law and order situation, she offered to retire in August of 2016. The BJP accepted her resignation.
